Ruta del Fin del Mundo
Southernmost overland route in the Americas
The literal end of the continental world lies at the tip of this punishing route across Tierra del Fuego’s endless grasslands. Cabo de Hornos may get the fame, but this overland track to Puerto Williams puts you at the southernmost continental settlement in the Americas. The route crosses multiple estancias and sheep stations, following century-old gaucho trails through landscape that hasn’t changed since Darwin sailed these waters.
Patagonian winds exceed 100 km/h regularly, and mud bogs can swallow vehicles to the axles during the rainy season. Stock 4WD handles the terrain, but carry winch gear and maxtrax for the inevitable bog-downs. November through March offers the only reasonable window, though even summer brings sudden snowstorms. Fuel is scarce—top off in Porvenir and carry jerry cans. The experience of reaching the world’s edge, with views across the Beagle Channel to Cape Horn, makes every frozen kilometer worthwhile.
