Ruta Nacional 23 – Magallanes Patagonia Steppe

Patagonian highway through endless guanaco steppes

Easy

Ruta Nacional 23 cuts a straight gravel line across 200 miles of Patagonian emptiness between the Argentine border and Punta Arenas, passing through estancias where guanacos outnumber people 100 to 1. This is the loneliest highway in Chile, crossing windswept grasslands broken only by distant mountain ranges and the occasional gaucho on horseback. The road surface alternates between decent gravel and bone-jarring washboard, with fuel stops separated by massive distances and the constant Patagonian wind trying to blow you sideways.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent maintenance – stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine in good conditions, but 4WD helps in wet weather when the clay turns to soup. Fuel up at every opportunity and carry spares for the inevitable tire damage from sharp gravel. Best traveled October through March when daylight stretches long and temperatures stay above freezing. Wild camping is legal anywhere off the road. You’ll cover serious distance with nothing but endless sky, wild horses, and the kind of solitude that makes you question why you ever lived in a city.
