Ruta 3 Patagonian Steppe — Río Chico Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
This is Patagonia at its most stripped-down: wide open steppe, low thorny scrub, guanacos on the horizon, and wind that never really quits. The Río Chico corridor offers pull-off flats along the valley floor where overlanders running Ruta 3 or cutting across the southern Santa Cruz plateau can camp without crowds or infrastructure. Ground is generally firm gravel and compacted earth — workable in most conditions, though standing water can pool after heavy rain. Expect zero facilities, no fire rings, and no neighbors unless a gaucho passes through.
Access is directly off paved Ruta 3 or via provincial dirt connectors — most are passable high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, 4WD advised when wet. Wind is the primary enemy here: stake everything, orient your rig as a windbreak, and carry your water in. No cell signal in the lower valley sections. Best run October through March; winter cold and wind are brutal and snow can isolate access tracks without warning.
Steppe wind, guanacos, and all the sky.
