Baja California Spine Trail

The Baja California Spine Trail follows Mexico’s Federal Highway 1 backbone through some of the most remote desert terrain on the continent. Starting at Tijuana and ending at Cabo San Lucas, this route threads through the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir mountains, crosses the Vizcaíno Desert, and hugs dramatic Pacific coastline. Key waypoints include the volcanic landscapes near Santa Rosalía, the whale-watching hub of Guerrero Negro, and the technical descent into Bahía de los Ángeles where the Sea of Cortez first comes into view.

Rated moderate to difficult depending on seasonal conditions and route variations. Stock 4WD vehicles handle the main route, but high-clearance and good tires are essential for side tracks to remote beaches and oases. Best tackled October through April when temperatures are manageable. Fuel planning is critical—gas stations can be 200+ miles apart. Carry extra water, spare parts, and emergency communications.
