Whati to Gameti Winter Road — Tłı̨chǫ Communities Ice Route

Frozen lake chains into Tłı̨chǫ heartland.

Moderate

Once the Tłı̨chǫ All-Season Road opened Whatì to pavement, the winter ice extension to Gameti became the last link in the chain — and it’s the one that still demands respect. From Whatì the route heads northwest across a series of frozen lakes including Wecho Lake and the interconnected water systems of Tłı̨chǫ territory, threading through boreal forest travel corridors to reach Gameti (Rae Lakes) on the east shore of Lac La Martre. The lakes are the highway here; onshore sections are narrow, spruce-lined cuts that stay soft longer than you’d expect. The GNWT opens this road in late January most years and it runs through late March depending on temperatures.

Difficulty is Moderate for an experienced winter driver — the surface is groomed ice and packed snow but pressure cracks, overflow, and changing ice thickness demand you pay attention every kilometre. A 4WD truck with winter tires is the minimum; an overland-equipped rig with recovery gear, a -40°C sleep system, and extra fuel is smarter. There’s no fuel or services between Whatì and Gameti. Check GNWT road condition reports before you leave — road closures happen fast with warming events. The reward is Tłı̨chǫ country in deep winter: frozen silence, boreal wilderness unchanged for generations, and a living Indigenous community at the end of the road.
