Wekweètì Winter Road — Yellowknife to Wekweètì via Snare Lakes
Frozen Shield lakes to the edge of the Barren Lands.
Wekweètì — formerly called Snare Lake — sits about 320 km north of Yellowknife in the heart of Tłı̨chǫ Dene territory, accessible only by air or by winter road once the lakes freeze solid. The route is a seasonal community lifeline and runs northeast from Behchokǫ̀ across a chain of Canadian Shield lakes connected by land bridges and portages, threading through some of the most dramatic boreal and pre-tundra terrain in the NWT. Massive spruce stands give way to open rock and frozen lake country the further north you push, and the feeling of being genuinely far from anything is overwhelming by the time Wekweètì comes into view.
This is a difficult to expert route depending on conditions. Ice road etiquette is mandatory — posted speed limits must be obeyed on lake surfaces to prevent dangerous wave action under ice. The GNWT typically opens this road in January and closes it in late March or early April. Minimum vehicle: well-maintained 4WD with cold-weather prep, full recovery gear, and enough fuel for the round trip since there is no pump in Wekweètì for public use. Satellite communication is essential. If you’re running this as a recreational overlander, go with a local or someone who has done it before — the Tłı̨chǫ community is welcoming but the land doesn’t forgive mistakes in February.
