Gibb River Road — Derby to Kununurra via the Kimberley Gorge Country (Dry Season Classic)

The Gibb River Road is the backbone of the Kimberley. Derby to Kununurra, roughly 660 km of unsealed dirt that grinds your teeth loose on the corrugations and rewards you with some of the most spectacular gorge country on the planet. Bell Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Manning Gorge, Windjana — you’re threading through ancient limestone ranges, crossing rivers that run chest-deep in the wet and ankle-deep in August, and stopping at station homesteads that have been working cattle country since before most countries had roads. The Pentecost River crossing east of El Questro is the signature moment: a wide, braided ford where crocs sun on the banks and the Cockburn Range turns red in the afternoon light behind you.
This is a Moderate-to-Difficult route depending on how recent the grading was and how ambitious you get with the gorge side tracks. A well-set-up 4WD with a long-range tank is the minimum — fuel at Imintji, Mount Barnett, Home Valley, and El Questro, but gaps hit 300 km. Run it May through September; outside that window the wet season closes most of the road and crossings become genuinely dangerous. No permit required for the main road, though some station side gorges charge a small access fee. Bring your own water, a satellite communicator, and at least two spare tyres. What you get out of it: one of the great drives on earth.

Can a stock Land Cruiser 200 or Patrol handle this, or do I need a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD like a 200 Series or Patrol GU will get through, but a 2-3 inch lift helps with the rougher creek crossings and deep corrugations. Underbody protection — bash plates, tank guard — is not optional; the rocky creek beds will find your drain plug.
Is the Gibb River Road open year-round?
No. It typically closes during the wet season (October through April) and reopens around May. Exact dates vary year to year depending on rainfall — check current status with Main Roads WA before you go, as sections can remain impassable well into May after a heavy wet.
Do I need any permits or fees to drive the Gibb River Road itself?
The road itself is free and public. However, several gorges and stations along the route — including El Questro, Manning Gorge, and Windjana Gorge — charge separate entry and camping fees. Budget for these; they add up across a full traverse.
What's the hardest section and what makes it rough?
The corrugations are relentless throughout, but the creek crossings — particularly around the Pentecost River crossing near El Questro — can run thigh-deep or higher after upstream rain even in the dry season. The Pentecost has taken vehicles; check water levels and watch for crocs before you wade in to test depth.
How far apart are fuel stops, and do I need a long-range tank?
Fuel gaps between Derby, Imintji, Home Valley Station, and Kununurra can exceed 300 km on the remote stretches — a long-range tank (180L+ effective range) or approved jerry cans are essential. Don't count on fuel at every station stop; call ahead to confirm availability before you leave Derby.
