Cougar Creek Road

Mining ghost road to alpine wilderness

Difficult

This forgotten logging and mining road winds deep into the North Cascades backcountry, following Cougar Creek through stands of old-growth cedar and hemlock before climbing to exposed volcanic ridges near Glacier Peak Wilderness. The route traces an old mining claim access from the 1920s, with rusted mining equipment still scattered in the creek bed and weathered wooden flumes clinging to canyon walls. The final approach to Cougar Lake involves a steep, loose rock climb that has claimed more than a few oil pans.

High-clearance 4WD required, with rock sliders strongly recommended for the upper section’s sharp basalt shelves. Two major creek crossings become impassable during spring runoff — stick to late summer through early fall for best conditions. No permits needed, but the rough access keeps crowds minimal. Primitive camping available at several clearings, though water sources should be treated. The effort rewards with pristine alpine lakes, panoramic Cascade views, and genuine solitude in one of Washington’s wildest corners.
