Chemin du Lac Témiscamingue Nord — Réserve faunique La Vérendrye Northern Shore Circuit
Clay-based boreal hell on the Quebec-Ontario line.
Drop into the La Vérendrye reserve from the north and you’re in logging-road country that hasn’t changed much since the pulp cutters moved through in the 1950s. The Chemin du Lac Témiscamingue Nord traces the eastern shore of the lake system north toward the Ontario border, passing Lac Simard and punching through black spruce stands on clay-based two-track that turns into a greasy nightmare after rain. The worst stretch is the 12-kilometre section between Lac Simard and the Rivière Kipawa confluence — narrow, cambered, and bordered by soft shoulders that will swallow a rear tire without warning. Moose are thick here in September. You will see them.
This is a moderate-to-difficult run depending on conditions — wet clay roads demand a proper 4WD with a locking diff and all-terrain tires minimum, with a recovery kit that actually gets used out here. Cell service is non-existent past the first 20 km. Fuel up in Ville-Marie before you leave; the nearest gas is 90 km of rough road away. Best run June through September before the fall freeze-thaw turns the clay to soup. The reward is absolute solitude, world-class walleye fishing, and lakeside camping that costs you nothing but the effort of getting there.
