Chemin Forestier de la Zec de la Rivière-Kipawa — Abitibi-Témiscamingue Boreal Shore Circuit

Pine, granite, and pike country near Ontario.

Difficult

The Kipawa River drains a sprawling network of lakes along the Ontario border in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and the Zec forestry roads following its watershed are among the least-travelled in southern Quebec. You pick up the main access off Route 101 south of Témiscaming, cross the Kipawa River on a single-lane timber bridge that rattles appropriately under a loaded rig, and push into a vast pine-and-granite landscape that feels genuinely distant from anything urban. The road surface oscillates between decent gravel and rutted clay — the clay sections near Lac Laniel hold water for weeks after rain and will bury a two-wheel-drive vehicle without ceremony. Logging trucks are active on the main arteries; the rule is simple, pull over and wave. Side spurs to lake shores reveal campsites used by pike and walleye anglers that no guidebook mentions.

Moderate to difficult depending on recent weather — a capable 4WD with a locker handles the worst of it, but recovery gear (traction boards, a shovel, a snatch strap) is non-negotiable. The Zec requires a daily or annual access permit; buy it at the Témiscaming sector office or online. Best season is late June through September — mud season in May closes interior spurs. Fuel in Témiscaming before you enter; it’s the last reliable stop. Cell service is non-existent past 10 km. The payoff is lake-studded Canadian Shield solitude and Zec-designated waterfront camping that costs next to nothing.
