Chemin Forestier de la Zec Pontiac — Outaouais Shield Backcountry Circuit

Shield granite and beaver ponds three hours from Ottawa.

Moderate

The Zec Pontiac sits in one of the most underrated overland zones in Quebec — Outaouais country, where the Canadian Shield breaks through the soil in long granite ridges and every low spot seems to have a beaver dam turning the trail into a pond. The main forestry circuit runs from the Pontiac-Coulonge axis northwest through active and decommissioned logging blocks, following the Rivière Coulonge drainage toward Lac des Cèdres and beyond. The technical sections come from rock ledge crossings — naked Precambrian granite that requires slow, deliberate tire placement — and the recurring beaver pond crossings that can be knee-deep or axle-deep depending on the season and how ambitious the local colony has been that summer.

Mid-difficulty overall, but specific sections push into difficult territory after heavy rain or in early spring. High-clearance 4WD is the baseline; a snatch strap and a hi-lift jack are not optional out here. The Zec Pontiac requires a Zec access fee, available at the main reception. Best season is late June through early October. Fuel in Shawville or Pontiac before entering — there is nothing inside. The payoff is consistent: granite-rimmed lake camps, minimal traffic, and the kind of silence that takes a day to get used to.
