Sumter National Forest Chauga River Gorge Technical Loop
Expert granite technical in remote river gorge.
The Chauga River Gorge technical loop drops 800 feet through granite boulder fields and rhododendron thickets into one of South Carolina’s most remote river gorges, where the Chauga River has carved a 300-foot-deep canyon through billion-year-old Precambrian rock. The route follows old Cherokee hunting paths later used by moonshiners, with the most technical section at Devil’s Kitchen—a slot canyon requiring precise wheel placement between house-sized boulders. Multiple creek crossings demand careful line selection, especially at the main Chauga River ford where granite ledges create natural tire traps.
This is expert-level terrain requiring modified 4WD with rock sliders, differential guards, and recovery points—stock vehicles will suffer damage. Essential gear includes winch, tree savers, and rock anchors for the inevitable recovery situations. Best tackled during late summer low water from August through October when creek levels drop. No permits required, but inform someone of your plans—cell service disappears completely once you drop into the gorge. The reward is access to pristine native trout waters and granite pools perfect for a victory swim after a brutal day of wheeling.
