Chemin de la Réserve faunique de Plaisance — Outaouais River Flats to Laurentian Shield Edge Circuit

Shield edge and river wetlands, two hours from Ottawa.

Moderate

Réserve faunique de Plaisance sits a short drive northeast of Gatineau and gets overlooked by overlanders chasing bigger names to the north — which is exactly why it earns a spot in your database. The access roads through the reserve run from the Outaouais River lowlands, where wetland crossings and soft organic soils swallow axles after rain, up onto the first scarps of the Laurentian Shield where the track turns to exposed granite and fractured quartzite. The Rivière Rouge tributary crossings inside the reserve can run fast and cold in May and June; by late summer they’re manageable for a stock high-clearance rig. The reserve requires a SÉPAQ access fee — day passes and seasonal permits are available at the entry station on Route 317 north of Plaisance village. Watch for moose in the wetland margins at dawn and dusk; this reserve has a dense population.

This is a legitimate moderate run with one honest difficult section on the northern loop where the track climbs a bedrock ramp and drops into a clay bowl that holds water long after rain. An all-terrain tire and high clearance get you through most of it; a locker is insurance on the clay sections. Best season is late June through October. Fuel in Papineauville before entry. Cell service is spotty near the entry and drops to none in the northern sections. What you’re paying for is proximity — Shield country and wetland wildlife within two hours of Ottawa.
