Rannoch Moor Traverse — Bridge of Orchy to Glencoe via Black Mount Estate Road
Fifty square miles of Scottish bog and sky.
Rannoch Moor is the kind of place that makes you feel genuinely small. This route leaves the A82 at Bridge of Orchy, picks up the old military road alignment and Black Mount Estate track, and pushes northeast across the open moor toward Ba Bridge and the Black Corries — a sequence of river crossings and soggy track that has swallowed overconfident vehicles since the drove road days. The Ba River crossing is the crux: after rain it runs fast and thigh-deep, and the approach track turns from firm gravel to axle-deep peat sponge with zero warning. The Blackrock Cottage at White Corries is the only landmark of note mid-route before the descent into Glencoe’s jaws.
This is legitimate high-clearance territory in wet conditions — a lifted Land Rover Defender or equivalent with good all-terrain tyres is the minimum. Body armour isn’t a luxury here. The track is technically on private estate land; contact Black Mount Estate before heading out. No cell service across the moor. Best window is June through September, but even midsummer the bog can close sections after sustained rain. Bring recovery gear, a sat communicator, and enough fuel for the round trip — there’s nothing between Bridge of Orchy and Glencoe village. What you get is total wilderness immersion inside Scotland’s most dramatic mountain amphitheatre.
