Glen Etive — Highland Wild Camping

Dispersed Camping

Glen Etive runs about 12 miles from the A82 near Glencoe to the head of Loch Etive. It’s one of the most photographed single-track roads in Scotland, with the Etive river tumbling past pools and waterfalls and Buachaille Etive Mòr standing guard at the entrance. Scotland’s right to roam allows responsible wild camping, and overlanders pull off along the road and near the loch end. Spots are informal and unmarked. Midges are fierce from late spring through early autumn, and weather swings from glorious to horizontal rain in an hour.

The road is paved but narrow, with passing places. Use them, and don’t park in them or block them. Glen Etive’s popularity has caused real problems with litter, human waste, and fires, so carry out everything and bring a toilet kit. Keep the Scottish Outdoor Access Code in mind, leave no trace, and camp small and short. Have a dirty day.

Single-track road, river pools, and Highland mountains.
