Rannoch Moor — Black Mount Wilderness Viewpoint

Rannoch Moor is roughly 50 square miles of blanket bog, lochan-studded moorland, and ancient Scots pine remnants sitting at around 1,000 feet above sea level on the border of Perth and Kinross and Argyll. The A82 cuts across its southern edge, and the pullouts along here give you uninterrupted views across the whole bleak expanse toward the Black Mount range to the south and west. On a clear day it’s stunning. In low cloud it feels like the end of the world — which, depending on your state of mind, is exactly what you came for.

There’s no barrier to getting here — the A82 is paved and accessible year-round, though winter driving on this stretch can be genuinely dangerous in ice and snow. The moor itself is a SSSI, so stay on established paths if you leave the vehicle. Best light is early morning or late evening when the lochs catch the sky. Midges are savage June through August — bring Smidge or accept your fate.
