Devil’s Staircase — A82 Glencoe to Kinlochleven Summit Viewpoint

Point of Interest

The Devils Staircase is the name given to the brutal zigzag climb on the old military road — and the modern West Highland Way — from Altnafeadh above Glencoe up to around 1,760 ft above sea level, with views back over Rannoch Moor and forward to the Mamore mountains above Kinlochleven. The signed WHW car park at Altnafeadh off the A82 is the access point. This is a boot-to-summit viewpoint, not a drive-up, but the car park itself sits in one of the most dramatic overland positions in Scotland with Buachaille Etive Mòr filling the windscreen as you pull in.

Park at Altnafeadh — there’s a rough layby on the A82 with space for a handful of vehicles. No facilities whatsoever. The summit trail walk is around 2 miles one way with 1,400 ft of gain. Winter brings ice and spindrift — treat this as a summer and autumn waypoint unless you’re properly equipped. Glencoe village, 6 miles south, has fuel, food, and a good gear shop.

Rannoch Moor panorama — earned on foot from the A82.
