Ruta Panorámica PR-52 Cayey to Salinas Coast Road

This route drops from the cool coffee farms of Cayey at 2,400 feet down through the rugged limestone karst country to the salt marshes of Salinas on the Caribbean coast. The first section follows old plantation access roads through working coffee fincas before hitting the technical descent at Mirador La Piedra, where the trail becomes a series of loose rock switchbacks carved into the limestone escarpment. You’ll navigate several creek crossings and pass abandoned sugar mill ruins dating to the Spanish colonial period.

Moderate to difficult depending on recent rains – the limestone gets slick and the creek crossings can go from ankle-deep to axle-deep overnight. High-clearance 4WD essential, with skid plates recommended for the rocky descents. Dry season (December to April) is ideal, but expect muddy conditions year-round in the coffee plantation sections. The payoff is legitimate solitude and some of the island’s most dramatic elevation changes in a single day’s drive.
