Sierra de Cayey Hacienda Buena Vista Sugar Mill Circuit

19th-century sugar plantation roads through bamboo tunnels

Easy

This interconnected web of plantation roads radiates out from the restored Hacienda Buena Vista, built in 1833, threading through what was once Puerto Rico’s most productive sugar and coffee region. The main circuit follows the original ox-cart paths used to haul cane to the mill’s water-powered machinery, now passing through tunnel-like bamboo groves and crossing the Río Bayamón on stone foundations laid by enslaved laborers nearly two centuries ago.

Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though some sections get muddy during rainy season (May-November). The conservation trust maintains the main routes, but side spurs to collapsed mill buildings require careful navigation through overgrowth. Plan half a day for the full 12-mile loop, with excellent camping spots near the river crossings. This is living history you can drive through — and one of the few places where Puerto Rico’s plantation past remains intact and accessible.
