Wedge Overlook and San Rafael Swell Backcountry — Mexican Mountain Road

Swell country river road with zero crowds.

Moderate

The Mexican Mountain Road runs roughly 20 miles one-way along the San Rafael River corridor from the mouth near I-70’s San Rafael Bridge rest area south through cottonwood-lined river bottoms, slickrock benches, and eroded Entrada sandstone formations to the base of Mexican Mountain itself. The road is flat and easy near the river, then turns technical as you climb onto the mesa system — loose ledge rock, shelf road with no guardrails, and a few moves that require careful tire placement. The payoff is consistent: canyon wrens in the walls, zero crowds, and a sense that the Colorado Plateau is yours alone for a few hours.

This is a high-clearance route on the easier end of technical — a stock Toyota Tacoma or 4Runner on all-terrains handles it fine in dry conditions. The San Rafael River corridor is impassable when wet; the clay turns to axle-deep grease with zero traction. Run it April through June or September through November. Nearest fuel is Green River or Castle Dale. Water from the river must be filtered. No permit required. BLM manages the area and dispersed camping is wide open along the corridor. Cell service is nonexistent once you leave the interstate corridor — budget accordingly.
