Cathedral Valley Loop — Capitol Reef’s Remote Northern Circuit

Monoliths, mud, and a river ford nobody warns you about.

Difficult

Most Capitol Reef visitors never get north of the paved Scenic Drive. Cathedral Valley is a different planet entirely — a 58-mile dirt loop through the park’s wild upper district where Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon, two freestanding Entrada sandstone monoliths rising 500 feet off the valley floor, stand in absolute silence. The route crosses the Fremont River at the Hartnet Road ford, rolls through Bentonite Hills badlands that turn the landscape alien shades of purple and gray, passes the Glass Mountain gypsum selenite formation, and climbs the Cathedral Valley overlook before looping back via South Draw Road.

The Fremont River crossing is the gatekeeper — typically 18 to 24 inches deep, with a soft sandy bottom that punishes the underprepared. High clearance is mandatory; 4WD strongly recommended. Bentonite clay sections become impassable when wet — don’t even attempt it after rain. Best season is April through June and September through October. No fuel inside the park’s north district; fill up in Torrey or Loa. One primitive campground at Jailhouse Rock with vault toilet, no water. Cell service is nonexistent.
