Milk River Canyon Road — Writing-on-Stone to Whisky Gap Border Country (Alberta)

Badlands, hoodoos, and Prohibition ghosts.

Moderate

Most Alberta overlanders never make it this far southeast, which is a genuine shame. The Milk River canyon cuts through some of the most dramatic badlands in the province — hoodoo formations, cottonwood-lined riverbanks, and cliff faces covered in Blackfoot rock art at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. From the park, gravel and two-track roads push south and east toward Whisky Gap, a historic smuggling crossing used during U.S. Prohibition. The terrain is deceptive: it looks flat from a distance and hides eroded clay benches, deep-cut coulees, and gumbo mud that turns the road into a skating rink after rain. The RCMP once patrolled these tracks looking for rum runners; now you’ll see pronghorn and golden eagles. The last stretch to the border fence at Whisky Gap is especially remote.

Difficulty sits at Moderate in dry conditions but jumps to Difficult or worse after any rain — Alberta’s gumbo clay is not a joke. A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum; AT tires are strongly recommended. This is true short-grass prairie country with no shade, no water, and no services between Milk River town and the border. Bring your own water, fuel up in Milk River, and go July through September when the clay roads are dry. The petroglyphs at Writing-on-Stone are a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stay on designated paths. No permit required for the road route itself.
