Milk River Ridge Route

Ancient pathways through sacred badlands

Moderate

The Milk River Ridge Route traces ancient pathways through the otherworldly hoodoos and sandstone pillars of Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, where Indigenous peoples carved petroglyphs thousands of years ago. This lesser-known track follows the ridgeline above the Milk River, offering commanding views of the Sweetgrass Hills across the Montana border. The trail passes through the park’s backcountry archaeological sites, including some of the most significant rock art collections in North America, before descending into the river valley where cottonwoods provide shade along the meandering waterway.

Rated moderate for the technical sections through loose sand and rocky outcrops, but accessible to stock high-clearance vehicles with experienced drivers. The main challenges are soft sand patches that can trap the unwary and route-finding through unmarked sections where cattle trails intersect the main track. Best traveled April through October, avoiding spring runoff and winter conditions. Park permits are required, and camping is restricted to designated areas. This route rewards visitors with solitude, ancient history, and some of Alberta’s most unique geological formations—a stark contrast to the mountain wilderness most associate with Canadian overlanding.
