Wildhorse Lake Road — Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park Backcountry
Prairie plateau nobody saw coming.
Most Alberta overlanders never make it to the Cypress Hills, and that’s exactly why you should. The Wildhorse Lake Road in the Alberta block of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park cuts through mixed forest and open plateau terrain that feels completely out of place on the surrounding flatlands — this plateau survived the last glaciation, meaning you’re driving through a biological island with endemic species and landscapes that don’t exist anywhere else in the prairies. The track winds past Wildhorse Lake and through aspen and lodgepole pine stands, with occasional prairie vistas dropping off the plateau escarpment that’ll stop you cold. Watch for deep ruts after wet weather — the clay-loam surface punishes unprepared rigs.
This is legitimately achievable in a stock 4WD with decent clearance on dry days, but the clay soil turns greasy and treacherous after rain — mud tires earn their keep here. Best season is late spring through early fall; winter closes park access roads. Medicine Hat is your fuel and resupply point — about 60 km from the park’s Alberta entrance. The park charges a day-use fee. Cell coverage is nonexistent inside the park boundary. This is quiet, uncrowded backcountry with good dispersed camping and genuinely surprising terrain for southeast Alberta.
