Five Ponds Wilderness Access Road
Gateway to untouched Adirondack wilderness
The Five Ponds Wilderness Access Road cuts through 118,000 acres of roadless Adirondack wilderness where the only sounds are your tires on sand and water babbling over rocks. This former logging road starts near Wanakena and threads through mixed hardwood and conifer forests, crossing Wolf Creek twice before reaching the wilderness boundary. The second ford runs deeper and wider, with a rocky bottom that’ll test your line choice and clearance.
Moderate difficulty with high-clearance 4WD required for the creek crossings and loose sand sections. Best tackled May through October when water levels drop but mosquitoes emerge with vengeance. No permits needed, but you’re entering true backcountry where cell service vanishes and the nearest gas is 30 miles back. Dispersed camping available at the trailhead area. This route delivers what most Adirondack drives promise but rarely provide: genuine remoteness and the satisfaction of earning your wilderness access.
