Adirondack Park Fish Creek Truck Trail
Forgotten logging roads deep in Adirondack wilderness
This forgotten logging trail cuts through the heart of the Adirondack Park, connecting Fish Creek Ponds State Campground to Rollins Pond along rutted two-track that sees more moose than motor vehicles. The route follows old timber company roads from the 1920s, winding through dense spruce and hardwood forest with occasional glimpses of remote ponds. Key waypoint is the abandoned logging camp ruins at mile 8, where rusted machinery still sits in the forest.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the muddy sections and occasional fallen trees across the trail. Stock pickup trucks can handle dry conditions, but expect deep mud holes after rain and snow melt. Best tackled May through October when the ground firms up. No permits needed since it’s within the park’s motor vehicle corridor. Bring recovery gear and a chainsaw for downed trees. You’ll earn solitude few Adirondack visitors ever experience, plus excellent dispersed camping along the ponds.
