Nossob River Valley 4WD Track — Twee Rivieren to Nossob Camp via the Kgalagadi Fossil Riverbed

The Nossob hasn’t flowed with any regularity for centuries, but drive its bleached sandy bed north from Twee Rivieren to Nossob Camp and you’ll understand why predators still patrol its banks. The river’s old course forms the South Africa–Botswana border, and the unfenced Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park runs wild on both sides. The route is all soft Kalahari sand — two tracks pressed into the riverbed floor, flanked by grey camel thorn acacia and red dune lines. Key waterholes like Cubitje Quap, Leeudril, and Dikbaardskolk concentrate game, and with no fencing between you and a lion kill twenty metres off the track, this is the real Africa that people think they want until they actually have it.
Technically the Nossob track is moderate — mostly soft sand in the riverbed demanding reduced tyre pressures (around 1.2 bar) and a 4WD in low range through the deeper sections. A standard high-clearance 4WD handles it fine. The hard part is the park rules: you cannot exit your vehicle except at designated rest camps, you must be inside a camp at sunrise and sunset, and bookings are mandatory — the park caps vehicle numbers tightly. Fuel at Twee Rivieren and Nossob Camp only. Best April through September when heat is manageable and predator activity peaks around waterholes. This track delivers a genuinely wild African game experience with almost none of the minibus-safari circus.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Hilux or Defender handle the Nossob sand track, or do I need to air down?
A stock high-clearance 4WD handles it fine, but you must air down to around 1.0–1.2 bar (15–17 psi) for the deep Kalahari sand sections — especially between waterholes. Low-range and a steady throttle are your friends here; momentum matters more than horsepower.
When is the Nossob track closed or impassable?
October through March is brutal — summer heat regularly exceeds 45°C, water sources dry up, and the sand gets looser and more punishing. April to September is the window: cooler temps, better predator activity around waterholes, and firmer sand. Park management can also close specific sections after rare but heavy rainfall.
Do I need a permit to drive this route, and can I just rock up at the gate?
Yes — a valid SANParks permit and pre-booked accommodation or camping at Nossob Camp are mandatory. Walk-ins are rarely accommodated and the park gates have hard open/close times. Book through the SANParks portal well in advance, especially for April–July when demand is high.
What's the hardest section of the track and what should I expect?
The deep sand stretches north of Cheleka waterhole push the hardest — loose, corrugated, and relentless over several kilometres. It's not a rock-crawling technical challenge, but sustained sand driving in the midday heat will cook an unprepared driver and overheat a vehicle running at high tyre pressure. Pace yourself and don't push it solo.
There's no cell service — how far is the nearest fuel and what's the realistic range I need?
Fuel is available at Twee Rivieren (start) and Nossob Camp (end) — that's 160 km apart with nothing in between. No cell service, no outside assistance, no fences keeping the wildlife out. Carry a minimum 20-litre fuel reserve, a full-size spare, a second spare if possible, and a satellite communicator. Upington is 260 km from Twee Rivieren — factor that into your pre-trip fuel plan.
