Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park — Nossob River Fossil Bed Dispersed Camp
The Nossob fossil riverbed running between Nossob Camp and Twee Rivieren is one of southern Africa’s great overland corridors. The riverbottom track threads through classic Kalahari dunefield — red sand, grey camel thorn acacia, and an ungodly amount of gemsbok and springbok working the dunes. SANParks designates primitive bush camps along this route, the most notable being Urikaruus and Kij Kij, but overlanders in a self-sufficient rig can also stop at designated wilderness camp sites scattered along the two-track. These are unfenced, unlit, and without any facilities — just a fire ring and whatever the Kalahari delivers at night, which is often a hyena, sometimes a lion.
Access requires a valid Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park permit and a reservation through SANParks — no free-camping on the park grid, but the designated wilderness sites function as the dispersed equivalent inside this ecosystem. 4WD is mandatory once the sand deepens after rain. Gate-to-gate movement is tightly controlled; you must reach your booked site before park curfew. Fuel up fully in Upington — there’s no pump at Nossob.
