Trans-Kalahari Crossing — Twee Rivieren to Mata-Mata via the Kgalagadi Dry Riverbeds

Lion tracks in Kalahari sand. No fences.

Moderate

The internal 4WD tracks running between Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata camps through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park represent one of the purest wilderness drives in southern Africa. You follow the dry Nossob and Auob riverbeds — ancient highways for predators — across rolling red dunes covered in silver camelthorn and shepherd’s tree. The Mata-Mata loop via the Auob riverbed is where lions, cheetah, and black-maned Kalahari lion are commonly spotted at waterhole blinds. There are no fences between South Africa and Botswana along these tracks, and you feel that openness in your chest the whole way.

The park enforces strict movement rules: you must be at camp before gates close and cannot self-recover outside designated areas. Deep sand is the primary obstacle — deflate to around 1.4 bar and know how to use your recovery boards. A 4WD with a rooftop tent and 80L+ water capacity is the practical minimum; fuel is available at main camps but plan carefully as distances between Twee Rivieren, Nossob, and Mata-Mata are substantial. Permits required; book accommodation months in advance, especially peak winter season (May–August). The Kgalagadi delivers what most parks only promise: genuine Africa, on its own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Hilux or Land Cruiser handle this without a lift?

Yes — stock clearance is fine, but the dry riverbeds demand proper aired-down sand driving (14-18 PSI) and you must carry a sand track recovery kit, hi-lift jack, and a full-size spare. Soft, corrugated sand is the challenge here, not rocks.

When is the route open and what happens if rain hits the Kalahari?

May through August is the dry-season window and by far the best time — cool days, minimal dust, and concentrated wildlife at waterholes. Summer rains (November–March) can make the riverbeds impassable and SANParks may close internal 4x4 tracks without notice.

Do you need a permit just to drive this route, or is park entry enough?

You need both a Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park entry permit AND a specific 4x4 wilderness trail booking through SANParks — the internal tracks are not open to general park visitors. Book well in advance at sanparks.org; daily vehicle slots are strictly limited.

What's the hardest section and what does it actually feel like to drive it?

The deeper Nossob and Auob dry riverbed sections are the most demanding — long stretches of loose, wheel-grabbing sand where momentum is everything and stopping is a mistake. It's not technical in a rock-crawling sense, but inexperienced sand drivers will get stuck; practice aired-down driving before you go.

Is there any fuel or water available between Twee Rivieren and Mata-Mata?

No fuel is available on route — the 190 km gap means you need sufficient range plus a reserve jerry can. Boreholes exist at designated rest camps but treat all water; carry a minimum of 10 liters per person per day as a baseline.
