The dirt roads threading through Caddo Lake’s maze of backwater channels and 25,000-acre cypress forest feel more like Louisiana bayou than Texas backcountry. This route follows the old timber roads that loggers carved through the swamp in the early 1900s, winding past ancient bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss and alligator-infested sloughs. The main challenge comes at Potter’s Point crossing, where the road dips below seasonal flood levels and can trap vehicles in knee-deep swamp water for weeks during spring rains.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on water levels — stock SUVs handle it in dry season, but high-clearance 4WD becomes essential during flood periods from January through April. Check water levels with Caddo Lake State Park before heading out, and bring extra recovery gear since cell service disappears once you’re deep in the cypress groves. Best season runs May through November when the swamp roads are passable and the mosquitoes are merely unbearable instead of apocalyptic.
