Cross Timbers National Forest Caddo Lake Wilderness Circuit
Ancient cypress swamps and technical creek crossings
This lesser-known gem winds through the Cross Timbers ecosystem where East Texas pine forests meet Great Plains grasslands. The 28-mile loop connects fire roads and hunting trails through the Caddo Lake Wilderness Study Area, passing ancient cypress groves, natural springs, and remnants of the old Caddo Indian trading routes. The technical highlight is Potters Creek crossing, where drivers navigate through knee-deep water around massive cypress knees and submerged logs that have trapped many vehicles.
Moderate to difficult depending on recent rains, requiring 4WD with good ground clearance and mud tires. Spring floods make passages impassable for weeks, while summer heat brings aggressive mosquitos and snakes. Best attempted fall through early spring when water levels drop and vegetation dies back. The route offers excellent fishing, hunting access, and primitive camping among some of Texas’s last old-growth cypress forests. Fuel up in Marshall beforehand—services are nonexistent once you’re in the swamp.
