Backcountry Discovery Route – Texas
1,200 miles across the heart of Texas
The Texas Backcountry Discovery Route stretches 1,200 miles from the Louisiana border to Big Bend National Park, showcasing every landscape Texas has to offer. Starting in the humid piney woods near Marshall, the route threads through ranch country, crosses the Hill Country around Kerrville, and finally descends into the Chihuahuan Desert. Key waypoints include the ghost town of Terlingua, countless historic ranches, and remote sections of the Llano River where you might not see another soul for hours.
Rated moderate overall, though individual sections range from easy dirt roads to technical rocky climbs in the desert mountains. Any high-clearance 4WD can handle most of it, but carry extra fuel—gas stations are sparse once you leave the Hill Country. Prime riding season is October through April when desert temperatures are bearable. Water sources are limited in West Texas, so plan accordingly. The payoff is experiencing the real Texas—vast ranch country, forgotten settlements, and some of the darkest night skies in America.
