Golden Road

The Golden Road earned its name from the millions in timber revenue it generated for Great Northern Paper Company, stretching 95 miles through Maine’s unbroken North Woods from Millinocket to the Canadian border. This gravel lifeline passes Chesuncook Lake, crosses the Penobscot River multiple times, and threads between Baxter State Park and the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The road’s most notorious section climbs through Telos Gate, where logging trucks once ruled and dust clouds could be seen for miles.

Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles to handle washboard gravel, occasional water bars, and active logging traffic during weekdays. Stock SUVs manage fine in dry conditions, but rain turns sections into muddy ruts. Best traveled May through October when gates are open and road maintenance is active. No permits needed on the main route, but expect toll gates and private land restrictions. Fuel up in Millinocket or Greenville—there’s nothing for 95 miles. The payoff is access to Maine’s most remote backcountry, with endless dispersed camping spots and some of the best brook trout water in North America.
