Penobscot River East Branch Logging Roads
Active logging roads through Maine's working North Woods
The East Branch Penobscot River logging road system spans over 60 miles of interconnected forest service and timber company roads through Maine’s North Woods. Starting near Medway, these active logging roads follow the river’s course past Whetstone Falls, Grand Lake Matagamon, and into the heart of the working forest that still feeds Maine’s paper mills. Massive log trucks share these roads, so radio etiquette and pullout courtesy are essential for safe travel through this industrial wilderness.
This is an easy to moderate route suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, though conditions change rapidly with logging activity and weather. The road network is typically accessible May through November, but check with timber companies for active harvesting areas. No permits required, but respect for working operations is crucial. Dispersed camping is available along the river, offering excellent fishing and wildlife viewing. Fuel up in Medway or Millinocket—services are nonexistent in the backcountry.
