Caddo Lake State Park Cypress Bayou Circuit
Ancient cypress swamp navigation
The moss hangs so thick you’ll need headlights at noon, threading through 26,000 acres of primordial swamp where alligators sun themselves on half-submerged cypress roots. This waterlogged maze follows old logging roads and oil access routes around Caddo Lake’s Louisiana side, passing the ruins of steamboat landings and Civil War-era camps. The route connects multiple wildlife management areas via raised shell roads and timber company tracks, with the iconic Big Cypress Bayou serving as your primary navigation landmark.
Expect moderate difficulty with seasonal flooding that can make passages impassable from December through March. High-clearance 4WD essential for the muddier sections, though most of the shell road base stays solid. No permits required, but check water levels with Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries before heading out. Best tackled April through November when water levels drop and mosquitoes become merely unbearable instead of apocalyptic. You’ll earn some of the most haunting swamp scenery in North America.
