Baobab Alley to Kirindy Forest Track
Madagascar's baobab and lemur wilderness
This legendary Madagascar track links the world-famous Avenue of the Baobabs with Kirindy Forest Reserve, threading through landscapes where 800-year-old baobab trees tower over red laterite earth. The route challenges drivers with deep sand sections, seasonal mud wallows during the rainy season, and the notorious Tsiribihina River crossing that can strand vehicles for days when water levels rise unexpectedly.
Standard 4WD with good ground clearance handles most conditions, but sand ladders and a winch are essential for the soft sections between Morondava and the forest. Avoid December through March when cyclones turn the track into a muddy nightmare. Dry season (April-November) offers the best conditions, though sand can still be treacherous. Fuel availability is sketchy beyond Morondava, so carry extra jerry cans. The payoff is accessing some of Madagascar’s most pristine wilderness and watching fossas hunt in their natural habitat.
