Truchas Peak Road — Santa Barbara Canyon to Pecos Wilderness Boundary
Ghost town at 8,375 feet — earn the dust.
The Bodie Ghost Town Road out of Bridgeport is the kind of California drive that makes you feel like you’ve earned something. Running east off US-395 on dirt from the Bodie Road junction, this 13-mile stretch climbs through sagebrush flats and high desert scrub before delivering you to the best-preserved ghost town in the American West — Bodie State Historic Park, sitting at 8,375 feet and frozen in time since the 1880s mining boom. The road itself is straightforward gravel, but late season or early morning trips can put frost heaves and loose shale underfoot. The park sits in a wind-blasted basin with no trees, no shade, and no cell service — just 200 preserved buildings and the smell of old timber.
This is one of California’s most accessible backcountry drives — a high-clearance 2WD can make it in dry conditions, but early spring and late fall demand 4WD and the ability to read road conditions. No fuel for 30+ miles in any direction, so top off in Bridgeport or Lee Vining. The park charges a day-use fee and is open year-round when the road is passable; winter access is often by snowmobile or skis only. Bring your own water. The reward is unreal: a frozen mining city at the edge of the Great Basin, completely worth the dust.
