Warren Dunes Beach Access Ridge Trail

Massive dunes meet Lake Michigan solitude

Moderate

This scenic route follows the ridge system behind Warren Dunes State Park’s massive sand mountains, connecting Tower Hill’s 260-foot summit with remote sections of Lake Michigan shoreline accessible only by 4WD. The trail winds through shifting sand dunes, oak savanna, and beachgrass prairies, with the infamous Tower Hill climb testing both vehicle and driver skills in deep, soft sand. The payoff comes at the northern terminus where you drop down to secluded beach camping spots with unobstructed Lake Michigan sunsets.

This moderate route requires 4WD with sand-appropriate tires and recovery gear—getting stuck in soft sand is not a matter of if, but when. Best tackled during cooler months (September-May) when sand is firmer and crowds are minimal. State park vehicle permits required, and camping reservations essential during summer months. Lower tire pressure to 15-20 PSI and carry a compressor, sand tracks, and plenty of water. The reward is having one of Michigan’s most spectacular stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline almost entirely to yourself.
