Pokagon State Park Angola Moraine Backcountry Circuit
Glacial kettle and moraine ridge exploration
The Angola Moraine backcountry road system threads through some of the most dramatic glacial topography in Indiana, where 10,000-year-old ice left a moonscape of steep ridges, deep kettles, and hidden marshes. The route climbs and drops through tight timber, navigating around kettle lakes like Hell’s Point Bog where the trail skirts within feet of 40-foot-deep sinkholes filled with sphagnum moss and carnivorous plants.
Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles with decent ground clearance for the rocky moraine ridges. Seasonal road closures protect wildlife during spring nesting season – check with park office before heading out. Best accessed May through October when frost hasn’t made the clay sections treacherous. Day-use only, no camping on this 8-mile loop, but nearby state forest offers dispersed options. This route showcases Indiana’s most unique landscape – genuine glacial chaos that feels more like northern Minnesota than the Midwest.
