Maumee State Forest Oak Openings Sand Ridge Explorer
Deep sand and rare prairie on ancient beach ridges
The Oak Openings region preserves some of Ohio’s rarest ecosystem on ancient beach ridges left by glacial Lake Warren 14,000 years ago. This route follows fire lanes and management roads through native oak savannas and wet prairies, with the notorious Sand Ridge Trail offering genuine deep sand challenges that’ll test your momentum skills. The old Wabash Cannonball Railroad grade provides easier passage between the technical sand sections.
Easy to moderate with occasional difficult sand pits that demand momentum and recovery gear. Stock 4WD with sand tracks recommended for the deeper stuff. Spring and fall offer the best conditions when sand isn’t scorching hot. No permits but trail access varies with fire management activities. Prime wildflower viewing in late spring with rare lupine blooms. Day trip from Toledo metro with no camping allowed in the preserve itself.
