Fernwood State Forest Sand Ridge Trail

Pine barrens and railroad history on sand

Easy

Fernwood State Forest protects one of Ohio’s last remaining sand prairie ecosystems, where glacial deposits created soil too poor for farming but perfect for rare pine barrens. The Sand Ridge Trail follows old logging railroad grades from the early 1900s, when the area supplied ties for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The route stays mostly flat through scattered jack pine and oak savannas, crossing several seasonal streams on wooden bridges built by CCC crews in the 1930s. The highlight comes at mile 7 where the trail reaches the old fire tower foundation with views across the Maumee River valley.

This rates as easy wheeling suitable for any high-clearance vehicle, making it perfect for family runs or breaking in new rigs. The sandy soil drains quickly, so spring mud isn’t an issue, and the open canopy keeps snow from lingering. No permits needed, and primitive camping is allowed throughout the forest with a simple registration. It’s not technical driving, but the unique ecosystem and railroad history make this a worthy destination for overlanders exploring Ohio’s diverse landscapes.
