Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Dike Road Circuit

Great Lakes wetland dikes and waterfowl migration

Easy

Twenty-six miles of elevated dike roads cross the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge’s 9,000-acre Great Lakes coastal marsh, where fall migration brings 70,000 waterfowl to Ohio’s northwest corner. The circuit follows maintenance roads across Wildlife Drive, Pool 1B, and the restricted East Dike system, where spring breakup creates technical mud holes and the October storm season floods low-lying sections with Lake Erie surge.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on season and weather conditions. High-clearance recommended during wet periods, though most sections handle stock SUVs in dry conditions. Peak waterfowl migration runs September through November, but dike roads stay open year-round except during spring nesting restrictions. No camping allowed, but nearby Magee Marsh and Maumee Bay State Park offer facilities. You’ll witness Ohio’s most significant waterfowl spectacle and experience the state’s last remnant of the Great Black Swamp.
