Homochitto National Forest Hurricane Creek Bridge Road
Abandoned CCC bridge through bottomland hardwoods
Hurricane Creek Bridge Road cuts through some of the most isolated bottomland hardwood forest in the Homochitto National Forest, where massive sweetgums and water oaks create a cathedral canopy over the rutted clay track. The route follows old logging roads from the 1940s, crossing Hurricane Creek multiple times on deteriorating concrete slabs before reaching the remains of an abandoned CCC bridge. You’ll navigate through standing water during winter months and dodge fallen timber year-round as the forest slowly reclaims the roadway.
This is moderate technical terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD and aggressive tread for the slick clay sections after rain. Multiple creek crossings range from ankle-deep to bumper-high depending on recent rainfall, and recovery gear is essential for the inevitable stuck-in-mud situation. Best tackled during dry summer months, though even then expect muddy conditions in the creek bottoms. No permits required, dispersed camping available in higher elevation clearings. Fuel up in Natchez before heading out—cell service disappears once you’re in the timber.
