Tippecanoe River State Park Backcountry Fire Road Loop
CCC-era roads through restored prairie and wetlands
The park’s backcountry fire road system winds through 2,800 acres of restored prairie and wetlands along the Tippecanoe River, following routes first cut by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The main loop connects the old CCC camp ruins with the river’s bend at Potawatomi Crossing, where spring floods can create challenging ford conditions. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with sandhill cranes, river otters, and occasional elk sightings along the wetland edges.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance vehicles and 4WD capability during wet conditions. The river crossing at Potawatomi can be impassable during spring floods – check with park staff before attempting. Best accessed May through October when fire roads are dry and wildlife most active. Day use only, no overnight camping permitted on the backcountry roads. This route offers a taste of Indiana’s pre-settlement landscape with prairie vistas and river bottom forests most visitors never see.
