Kankakee River State Park Sand Ridge Historic Military Road

1830s military trail through limestone river canyons

Easy

The Sand Ridge Historic Military Road traces portions of the original Hubbard Trail, a military supply route established in the 1830s to connect Chicago with settlements along the Kankakee River. This backcountry route follows old wagon ruts through the park’s most remote sections, winding through Pennsylvanian limestone canyons and crossing multiple tributaries where the original trail forded Rock Creek and tributaries feeding into the Kankakee. The route passes the ruins of Potawatomi Grove, an early settlement site, and connects with remnants of the Illinois & Michigan Canal feeder system through terrain that hasn’t changed much since frontier days.

Easy to moderate difficulty suitable for stock high-clearance vehicles, though spring flooding can make creek crossings impassable and turn the limestone base into slick clay. Best attempted late summer through fall when water levels drop and the trail firms up. No permits required but check with park rangers about seasonal closures during deer hunting season. This hidden piece of Illinois history offers genuine backcountry driving just 60 miles south of Chicago, with established camping at the state park and enough technical sections to keep things interesting without requiring serious rock-crawling gear.
