Matthiessen State Park Dells Canyon Technical Loop

Slot canyon navigation through hidden waterfalls

Expert

Matthiessen’s backcountry access road drops into the Vermilion River canyon system through a maze of sandstone walls and seasonal waterfalls that most visitors never see. The route follows old maintenance roads through the Upper and Lower Dells, requiring careful navigation around massive fallen sandstone blocks and through creek crossings that can turn nasty after spring melt. The highlight is the technical descent to Cascade Falls, where you’ll need to negotiate a series of rock steps that test your suspension travel and driver skill.

This is expert-level terrain requiring modified suspension, underbody protection, and winch capability. The sandstone can be treacherous when wet, making late spring through early fall the only viable seasons. Park permits aren’t required for the backcountry access, but you’ll need to check with rangers about seasonal closures during raptor nesting. Bring plenty of recovery gear and patience – several sections require multiple attempts to find the right line. The payoff is accessing some of Illinois’ most spectacular hidden waterfalls and slot canyons that few people ever experience.
