White Pines Forest State Park
Sixty-four sites spread across rolling hills under towering white pines that somehow survived the prairie fires and logging that claimed the rest. Half the sites are electric, the rest primitive — all sit among these 150-year-old giants that create a canopy you won’t find anywhere else in Illinois. The creek runs clear and cold year-round, and the whole place feels more like northern Wisconsin than the Prairie State. Peak season is fall color season, when the maples and oaks put on a show against the evergreen backdrop.
Access is straightforward off IL-2, but the narrow park roads weren’t built for big rigs — stick to 30 feet or less. Open year-round, though winter camping is primitive-only with vault toilets. No reservations taken, and sites fill fast on summer weekends.
