Hennepin Canal State Park Lock 22 Trail
This trailhead provides access to the longest rail-trail in Illinois, following the historic Hennepin Canal towpath for 61.5 miles across Bureau and Henry counties. The parking area can handle larger rigs and boat trailers, with vault toilets and an interpretive kiosk explaining the canal’s role in 1900s commerce. The trail surface is crushed limestone, suitable for hiking, biking, and equestrian use.
Lock 22 is one of several well-maintained access points along the canal. The trail runs dead flat through agricultural country and restored prairie, making it ideal for fat-tire biking or easy family hiking. No water available at this trailhead, but the town of Sheffield has services about 2 miles north.
