Buffalo Rock State Park Illinois River Overlook
This narrow ridge of St. Peter sandstone rises straight up from the Illinois River bottomland, giving you commanding views up and down the valley that early French explorers first mapped. The overlook sits at the western end of the park, where a short walk from the parking area brings you to cliff-edge views that stretch for miles. The park also protects restored tallgrass prairie and a series of mysterious earthworks — geometric mounds built by unknown hands centuries ago.
Access via Buffalo Rock Road off IL-178, about 2 miles of winding pavement up the bluff. The overlook trail is easy walking, but watch your step near the cliff edge — it’s a straight drop to the river. Best light is late afternoon when the sun angles across the valley.
