Starved Rock State Park LaSalle Canyon Technical Loop
Hidden canyons above the Illinois River
LaSalle Canyon Technical Loop follows old limestone quarry roads and maintenance tracks through the bluffs above the Illinois River, accessing remote canyons that most park visitors never see. The route threads between towering sandstone walls carved by glacial meltwater, past seasonal waterfalls that thunder 60 feet into shadowed pools, including the spectacular French Canyon falls that freeze into cathedral-like ice formations each winter.
Difficult terrain demands experienced drivers with lockers or limited-slip differentials for the steep, loose limestone grades and tight canyon passages. Spring snowmelt creates treacherous conditions; summer and fall provide the safest travel. Park permits required for backcountry access beyond main trails. No camping allowed, but nearby state parks offer facilities. Stock up in nearby Utica – this is day-trip territory with rewards that rival any Western canyon country, just 90 minutes from Chicago.
